How to spot a scam
Warning signs to watch for
You don't have to use DebtSolvedza to use this. These are warning signs worth knowing about, whoever you're dealing with.
They ask for money before doing any real work.
A legitimate debt specialist can explain what they'll do for you and what it costs before you pay anything. Be careful of anyone asking for payment upfront just to “start.”
They contact you out of nowhere.
If you never submitted a request anywhere and a company suddenly calls or messages you about your debt, that's a warning sign. This kind of unsolicited contact has led to real regulatory action against companies in South Africa, including forced refunds.
They pressure you to sign immediately.
A real professional gives you time to think and ask questions. Feeling rushed is a sign something isn't right.
They can't show you their registration.
A real debt counsellor has an NCR number. A real attorney is on the Legal Practice Council's roll. If someone can't or won't give you a number you can check yourself, don't go ahead.
They promise a certain result.
Nobody can guarantee a specific outcome with your creditors or the courts. Be careful of anyone who does.
They claim to clear old debts without checking your specific situation.
Whether an old debt still needs to be paid depends on real details — like when you last paid it, or whether there's already a court judgment. Anyone who promises to “clear” a debt without asking about those details first isn't doing real work.
